Imagery for Confidence

By Amy Bains, Elite Football Coach and Player Development Specialist

Imagery has been shown to play a significant role in athletic performance and mental preparation. Research by Gould, Weiss, and Weinberg (1981) found a strong correlation between successful athletes, high self-confidence, and frequent use of imagery techniques. Similarly, Orlick's (1988) work demonstrated that children could effectively refocus during games by employing relaxation and imagery methods.

In soccer, imagery can be applied to various aspects of the game, including:

  • Positioning

  • Tactical awareness

  • Technical execution under pressure

These mental rehearsals can help players prepare for the unique stressors of competitive environments that differ from training scenarios.Studies indicate that imagery can enhance several key aspects of athletic performance:

  • Competitive focus

  • Activation levels

  • Positive thought patterns

  • On-pitch performance

These improvements collectively contribute to increased self-confidence. As a result, imagery has become a popular tool for developing mental toughness and addressing individual needs, particularly in managing pre-match thoughts and emotions.

It's worth noting that the benefits of imagery extend beyond players. Coaches can also experience improved self-confidence through the use of imagery techniques. Therefore, both athletes and coaches are encouraged to incorporate imagery into their mental preparation routines.
